Gaia, Grandmother Earth

Ecopsychology, a new word for a study that has existed for centuries and up until the 20th century with the introduction of technology wasn’t a problem in our society. Ecopsychology literally means our soul’s connection with the soul of the land itself. Throughout the next few lessons you will be exploring the ever alive and budding soul of the land upon which we live. From the most subtle of energies to the most elaborate, you will learn how to converse with the trees, the rocks, the rivers, the lakes, the salmon, the squirrel and the bluejay or robin in your backyard. The first step to understanding the soul’s connection to that of the earth’s soul is to meet the elemental deities of the Earth herself. We do this by introducing the Grandmother of Earth, followed by Mother Earth and Father Winter. These three elementals rule over the Earth itself. Let us continue by looking first at the legend of Gaia.

Gaia or Gaea, known as Earth or Grandmother Earth (the Greek common noun for "land" is ge or ga). She was an early earth goddess and it is written that Gaia was born from Chaos, the great void of emptiness within the universe, and with her came Eros. She gave birth to Pontus (the Sea) and Uranus (the Sky). This was achieved parthenogenetically (without male intervention, or through virgin birth.). Other versions say that Gaia had as siblings Tartarus (the lowest part of the earth, below Hades itself) and Eros, and without a mate, gave birth to Uranus (Sky), Ourea (Mountains) and Pontus (Sea).
Gaia took as her husband Uranus, who was also her son, and their offspring included the Titans, six sons and six daughters. She gave birth to the Cyclopes and to three monsters that became known as the "Hecatonchires". The spirits of punishment known as the Erinyes were also offspring of Gaia and Uranus. The Gigantes, finally, were conceived after Uranus had been castrated by his son Cronus, and his blood fell to earth from the open wound.
To protect her children from her husband, (the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires, as he was fearful of their great strength), Gaia hid them all within herself. One version says that Uranus was aghast at the sight of his offspring so he hid them away in Tartarus, which are the bowels of the earth. Gaia herself found her offspring uncomfortable and at times painful, when the discomfort became to much to bear she asked her youngest son Cronus to help her. She asked him to castrate Uranus, thus severing the union between the Earth and Sky, and also to prevent more monstrous offspring. To help Cronus achieve his goal Gaia produced an adamantine sickle to serve as the weapon. Cronus hid until Uranus came to lay with Gaia and as Uranus drew near, Cronus struck with the sickle, cutting the genitalia from Uranus. Blood fell from the severed genitals and came in contact with the earth and from that union was born the Erinyes (Furies), the Giants and the Meliae (Nymphs of the manna ash trees).
After the separation of the Earth from the Sky, Gaia gave birth to other offspring, these being fathered by Pontus. Their names were the sea-god Nereus, Thaumas, Phorcys, Ceto and Eurybia. In other versions Gaia had offspring to her brother Tartarus; they were Echidna and Typhon, the later being an enemy of Zeus. Apollo killed Typhon when he took control of the oracle at Delphi, which Gaia originally provided, and then the "Sibyl" sang the oracle in Gaia's shrine.
It was Gaia who saved Zeus from being swallowed by Cronus, after Zeus had been born, Gaia helped Rhea to wrap a stone in swaddling clothes, this was to trick Cronus in to thinking it was Zeus, because Cronus had been informed that one of his children would depose him, and so to get rid of his children he had swallowed them, Gaia's trick worked and Zeus was then taken to Crete.
Gaia being the primordial element from which all the gods originated was worshiped throughout Greece, but later she went into decline and was supplanted by other gods. In Roman mythology she was known as Tellus or Terra.
In the Gaia myth, she came forth with Eros, an elemental counterpart. Gaia was an elemental being of land, sea and sky, where as Eros was the elemental being of Fire. They were spawned as a two part, and though Gaia ended up the more powerful of the two, Eros was still needed for his abilities of fire. Soon after Gaia’s creation however, Eros was pushed into the background, for fire was not a commonly needed element and could be created naturally by the other three elements. Hence in myth the name Eros was lost, and was later found when Aphrodite and Ares had a child and named him Eros. Then he became the God of Lust, Love and Sex, and this ends up leading us way off topic into the origin of the word Erotic. Originally Eros was the elemental being of Fire.
After the Greek era, both Gaia and Eros went into hibernation, a state of slumber, only to be awakened when the Earth was at her greatest need, some centuries later. Gaia is a fierce Grandmother of earth, upon leaving, she left the Earth with 2 properly balanced beings to rule over the seasons and weather of the Earth, and her return would only be warranted should chaos and corruption threaten to kill the Earth herself. In this age, Gaia and Eros have risen again, after 1000 years of slumber, and they are in the process of cleansing the Earth. Gaia’s force is strong and powerful, she will not allow the Earth to be destroyed by the hands of those who were left to take care of the Earth, and will stop at nothing in order to bring balance back to the Earth.
This leads us then into the two beings that were left to guide the Earth during Gaia and Eros’s slumber. These beings are Mother Nature and Father Winter. While the lines between Mother Nature and Gaia remain a little torn and broken here, it should be known that I speak of two separate entities, Gaia being the grandmother of Earth and Tea, being Mother Nature. I should explain that the names of the Elemental beings of the Earth were used a lot in BCE, but have thus been lost from the memory of many, and therefore the links seem to be broken. In terms of Father Winter, his lineage leads us through Old Man Winter, which then leads into the story of Father Frost, which then became the story of Jack Frost, which then became Frosty the Snowman. Mother Nature on the other hand has been mistaken to be Gaia, and a variety of other Goddesses such as Venus, Cybele, Dione, Dodona, and many others from Aztec, Incan, Babylonian, Greek, Sumerian, Irish, Welsh, East Indian and Native American traditions have viewed her as patrons goddesses of their pantheon.
The name Tea came when I meditated on the ancient and primal being Mother Nature, the being that embodies the Earth, and works opposite of Father Winter. The archetypes regarding who rules the land, sea and sky have been assumed many times over and we will get into such archetypes later on. In my mind, I wished to travel back to a time when humans did not exist, and ask simply the name of the being that guides and guards the earth. Her name was Tea. I believe this to be the ancient voice of the Earth itself, its actual essence, and while she is not the only Earth elemental she is one of the four that carry power. Mother Nature guards over Earth and Water, she creates the water cycles of rain, the currents of the oceans, the fertility of the earth soil, the grasses and flowers and trees that grow, she guides all these things to grow and flow. Her part in the governing of the Earth itself is important, as she also represents the spring and summer, the dethawing from the Winter cold, and the blossoming and high times of spring and summer.
Father Winter is the opposite of her, he guides over Air and Fire. He creates the whistling winds of winter, cools the temperatures of the Earth down with his winds, and allows snow to fall instead of rain. His domain is the sky, and his rage is the storms, the whistling winds, and the burning smoke of naturally caused forest fires or brush fires. He is more a being of natural disaster, of chaos, of unorganization, he wants the winters to last long and be hard. Not much more is known about him other than the tales of Frosty the Snowman and Father Frost, but he is not an elemental that is soon ignored when living in more northern parts of the land.
Together, these four elemental beings speak for the living Earth herself, they speak for her lands, her waters, her skies, her volcanoes, her rivers, rocks, lakes and trees. All these things separately have their voice, while the Earth herself has the voice of the four elementals that guard and protect her, and all her sacred beings, both plant, tree, rock, and animal.
