At least 15 people have been killed by a massive tornado that has ripped across the midwest state of Oklahoma.

Damage after winds from a tornado in Oklahoma

The twister tore a half-mile swathe through the town of Lone Grove shortly before 7.30pm (0130 GMT), the Oklahoman newspaper reported.

The National Weather Service said two people were killed by the tornado in Lone Grove where it caused "extensive damage".

The agency confirmed four tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas from a line of storms and issued tornado watches for the area to the east of Oklahoma.

Carter County Sheriff Ken Grace told the Oklahoman not all Lone Grove residents had been accounted for.

"It's just too dangerous," he said, referring to jagged metal and still-live electrical wires on the ground.

"We don't need to be adding any more injuries to what we already have."

One deputy sheriff told the paper entire families have been killed in a trailer park, adding: "I'm scared to death to see what daylight brings."

More than 29,000 residents have been left without power across the state.
